Kurtis Backiel Obituary, Death – Kurtis P. Backiel, a beloved member of the Clinton community, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and passion for life. Born in Concord and raised in Clinton, Kurtis was the son of Peter and Paula Backiel, and he shared a close bond with his sister, Krista Backiel, and her significant other, Shawn Gloster of East Longmeadow.

Kurtis was a graduate of Clinton High School, Class of 2003, where he displayed a strong sense of determination and dedication. Following his graduation, he made the courageous decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor and distinction in Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a Corporal, Kurtis demonstrated bravery and received numerous decorations for his exceptional service. After his discharge in 2006, he pursued higher education and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Class of 2020, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

A passionate lover of nature, Kurtis found solace in the great outdoors and was an accomplished master beekeeper. He cared for multiple beehives, cherishing the intricate harmony of these fascinating creatures. Kurtis’s love for nature extended to cultivating plants and gardens, exploring mountains, and discovering streams in valleys. His thirst for adventure also led him to prospect for minerals during his expeditions. Additionally, Kurtis possessed a talent for mechanics, taking great joy in fixing and optimizing machinery. He was known as the go-to person for help with household projects, always lending a hand to his family and friends.

Kurtis’s warm heart and gentle spirit endeared him to all who knew him. His devotion to his loved ones was unparalleled, and his absence will be deeply felt by his parents, sister, and extended family. He will also be missed by his maternal grandparents, Paul and Jackie Hester of Hudson, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who cherished his presence.

The community will gather to pay their respects during the calling hours at the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 AM on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Kurtis will be laid to rest privately.
