Mark Knutson Obituary, Fargo Marathon director and Detroit mountain manager died in fatal crash

Mark Knutson Death, Obituary – Mark Knutson, who was 53 years old and lived in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023. Mark Elliot Knutson was brought into this world on January 3, 1970 in the city of Moorhead, Minnesota, to parents named John and Sharon (Anderson) Knutson. In 1988, he obtained his high school diploma from Hillsboro High School, and in 1992, he graduated from Moorhead State University with bachelor’s degrees in both business administration and finance.

In Fargo, Mark started his professional life in the banking business. His employment at Tharaldson Enterprises and Ottertail Corporation brought him satisfaction in the years that followed. Mark was a brilliant man who pursued his ambitions in areas other than banking and business. In 2005, he took his love of running and transformed it into the Fargo Marathon, which has been going strong ever since. During his 19 years as Executive Director, he increased the number of participants in the race from 200 to over 20,000, and he gained a great number of friends.

He claimed that without his lifelong buddy Mike, the other members of the marathon committee, and all of the dedicated volunteers he had, he never would have been able to make the Fargo Marathon a success. He had completed a Double Ironman and was an enthusiastic participant in a number of the neighborhood running clubs. Mark was a highly driven and inspired individual. He inspired hundreds of individuals to take up running, walking, or any other form of physical activity that they found enjoyable.

He was not scared to make any of his numerous ideas a reality, and he had a lot of them. He was responsible for the creation of a large number of races, including the Illinois Marathon, the Zorbaz Beer Run, and the Friday the 13th Run, to mention just a few. Mark was aware of his preferences as a runner and made sure to take those into consideration whenever he organized events.

During the spring of 2022, he uprooted his life and went to Detroit Lakes, where he quickly found employment as the General Manager of Detroit Mountain. He poured his entire being towards conquering the mountain. He had a lot of reasons to be pleased with his performance there. In keeping with his character, he had already formulated extensive strategies for the future contributions that he will make to both the mountain and DL in the coming years. He cherished everything about his life in DL, including his house, his career, and the people he worked with.

First and foremost, Mark’s life revolved on his faith and his family. His faith in God provided him with the fortitude to press on through difficult times regardless of the challenges he faced. He was the most dedicated parent, son, and brother anybody could ever ask for. Elena, his first granddaughter, was born in October 2022, and he doted on her from the moment he set eyes on her.

He leaves behind his devoted family, which consists of his three children, Michael (Daniel) Dantas, Carly Knutson, and Cade Knutson; his parents, John and Sharon Knutson; his twin sisters, Lisa Ziegler and Lori Mehus; his granddaughter, Elena Dantas; his girlfriend, Donna Elbert; and a large number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He passed away on April 15, 2019. His grandfather and brother-in-law Robert Mehus came before him in death. Robert Mehus was his predecessor in death.

On Friday, July 14, there will be a funeral ceremony performed exclusively for the family. A public Memorial Service to remember and celebrate Mark’s life will be conducted at Hope Lutheran Church in South Fargo on Saturday, July 15, at 2:00 p.m. The service will be held in memory of Mark.
