Roger Maude Obituary, Death – It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the news of the sudden and untimely passing of our dear friend and founder member, Roger Maude. The Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers community is devastated by this loss, as Roger’s contributions and dedication played a significant role in the formation and success of our beloved dance troupe.
Back in 1977, during the annual Sowerby Bridge rushcart event, Roger, along with several other Scout Leaders, selflessly volunteered to pull the rushcart. Inspired by the performances of renowned Morris dance groups like Colne Royal Morris Men and Royton Morris, Roger, along with Andrew Titley, expressed their keen interest in establishing a local team of dancers. This enthusiasm led to the birth of the Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers in late 1978, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Over the years, Roger’s passion for Morris dancing and his unwavering commitment to the group saw him rise to the position of squire, becoming an influential figure within the side. His leadership, guidance, and infectious enthusiasm inspired countless dancers and helped shape the distinctive style and character of the Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers. His tireless efforts contributed significantly to the side’s growth and reputation, making a lasting impact on the local Morris dancing community.
Beyond his involvement in Morris dancing, Roger maintained a strong association with rushbearing. In those early years, he took on the responsibilities of the Treasurer and played a pivotal role in organizing the finances of the rushbearing events. Additionally, Roger’s craftsmanship shone through as he dedicated himself to building the rushcart, ensuring its magnificence and structural integrity for the procession.
Roger’s warm and affable nature endeared him to all who knew him. His infectious laughter, kind-hearted spirit, and unwavering dedication to preserving the traditions of Morris dancing touched the lives of countless individuals, both within the Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers and the wider community. His absence will be deeply felt, and his legacy will forever remain an integral part of the group’s history.
During this difficult time, our heartfelt condolences go out to Roger’s beloved wife Liz, his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration, and may the Sowerby Bridge Morris Dancers continue to honor his legacy by carrying on the traditions and values he held dear.
